Matthew 11:25-30

Come to Me, and I Will Give You Rest

Workout launch - Saturday August 30th

Thanks to our Newcastle crew for kicking off SOUL '25 with this word and workout.  This one is bound to test you spiritually and physically.  Newcastle is lead by T-Zo and Busshu-Chan, T-Zo originally from the USA and a member of our friends at F3 Nation.  He has definitely brought elements of their workouts to SOUL including the use of bricks and the infamous Murder Bunnies!!

SOUL Challenge is inspired by F3 and their own IronPAX challenge which SOLiD participated originally and we must acknowledge the brothers at F3 Greenwood for their support and encouragement.  They are doing great things over there and like us are inspired to strengthen and equip men across the nations.

So here is Week 0 - Details are below and the workout is live from Saturday 30th August 2025.  Once you complete it make sure you submit your times below.  And if you dare, you can redo and resubmit!!

The Word

25 At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; 26 yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.[g] 27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”This verse is in the context of Jesus Christ condemning the unrepentant Galilean cities in which God’s mightiest of works were done. Given the law and God’s works, these people should have repented, turning to the Lord. Christ thanks his Father for hiding “these things” from the wise – those who labor in obeying the Law – and revealing them to the little children – those who surrender to Christ to fulfill the Law.
Perhaps your soul is burdened by seeking righteousness. While we are here to become better: to get stronger, faster, smarter, tougher – none of these will give us rest because we will never be strong enough, fast enough, smart enough or tough enough. Give us the Law and we will try to be perfect but we never can be. Christ calls us to come to him, to let the crushing burden of trying to be good enough fall away as we learn to live by the Spirit and find rest for our souls.
We are refined by our experiences on this earth and there is value in our training, so we will train to be better, but we will also rest our souls by knowing the Grace of Christ alone.

The Workout

Exercise Arena: preferably grass or sand, but concrete acceptable – avoid breaking blocks. Need 40m of space. Mark out a starting line, then mark a lines 20m away (appx 65 heel-to-toe steps) and another 20m past that one. So, 3 lines total spaced 20m apart.

THE WORKOUT

Blockees: 1 x Round Number
Yoke Carry 20m to next line
Besser Block Curls (a.k.a. ‘Curls for the Girls’): 2 x Round Number
Murder Bunny 20m to next line
Besser Block Squats: 3 x Round Number
Cusack Carry Back to starting line

Do 11 rounds for Matthew 11

Finish the workout with one suicide: sprint from the start to the 20m and back, then from the start to the 40m and back. Finish is crossing the start line. You’ll notice how easy the yoke is and how unburdened you are without your block.

Equipment Needed

  • One Besser Block per Man
  • Something to mark a line long enough for the number of your men
  • Measuring tape recommended
  • Timer: can be a watch but a tablet or phone would be better

Exer-Pedia

  • Yoke carry: Besser block is laid across man’s shoulders, held in place with both hands
  • Blockee: A burpee with a block: Standing, hold besser block with both hands (able to push the block away rather than pull towards), squat and bend to place the block on the ground, extend legs back, do a pushup on the block, return to crouch and stand, bringing the block overhead into a press, then bringing the block a back to chest
  • Murder Bunny: Block in front of you, long end down with holes facing to side, with legs spread in a crouch bend over and grasp block. Lift block off the ground as you lean forward to place the block as far forward as possible. Keeping hands on the block, jump forward to put your legs straddling the block
  • Besser Block Squats: goblet squat to 90° with a block. Ensure everyone is holding them horizontal so there’s no excuse of the block hitting the ground to prevent a deeper squat
  • Cusack: Overhead carry of block, for the iconic clip of him holding a boombox over his head to call back his love in the classic 80s film Say Anything
